So, before I can answer “Why Grey Matter Droppings” I probably need to answer:
“Why a website?”
Like many people, I have some strong interests and a point of view - let’s call them “Hobbies”. The point of this website is to document some of the “hobbies” that I obsess on over time. A way to keep track for my own sanity while sharing ideas and developing a community of thought. At the same time, these ideas aren’t really appropriate for Facebook friends that really don’t care what little nicknack I’ve come up with for my next fly fishing adventure, or the nuances of my 3d printer build. Like many people, I enjoy my “hobbies” so much that I wish they were my primary source of income. But then I have to wonder if the glamour and magic fairy dust that makes them my passion would be lost. So until I come up with a magic solution for my “hobbies” to become my job… I will just enjoy them and share what I have learned.
“Why Grey Matter Droppings?”
As I was juggling around names for the website, a few questions were ping-ponging around in my head. What name would encompass an eclectic variety of topics ranging from my newfound love of 3d printing to fly fishing and online gaming? What name creates a sense of intrigue? And last, what name is representative of my personality instead of my professional persona? In my mind, Grey Matter Droppings represents all of these things. Let’s break it down.
“Why Grey Matter?”
While Grey Matter makes up only 40% of the volume of the brain (as opposed to White Matter), it uses approximately 95% of the brain’s oxygen. Why is this important? White Matter is there to connect the dots or better yet, help the Grey Matter communicate. Grey Matter is correlated to sight, hearing, emotions, speech and most of all… IQ. There have been studies done that argue whether or not a person is born with a capacity to grow their intelligence. I believe that the capacity to grow your intelligence is connected to your ability to think creatively and the mental challenges you are willing to overcome. My website is about those things that challenge me to think creatively.
Ok, so droppings can really only mean one thing - excrement. I really can’t fake it here. The idea was that my website is a reflection of my personality and I consider my “hobbies” to be connected to that personality. I love fun, have a quirky sense of humor and will always be a child at heart. I think that is representative of many people and their inner persona. And what inner child doesn’t laugh at the idea of brain poop.
